The history of social living of humans as social beings is very old. Forests, jungles, mountains, caves, nomadic life have been carved out in the process of development, and today the residents of the bright and modern global village. The Bengali nation has crossed the path of almost two and a half thousand years in the history of civilization and culture in the wavy course of the rich river called history-tradition and culture. There is a lot of glorious history, tradition and culture encircling this flowing route.

Since ancient times there are some own culture and some traditional use items. We have been nurturing these cultures for ages. All these things cherished for thousands of years have become an element of Bengali culture and tradition. The wheel of time changes, society changes, culture changes and individuality is lost and today it is added to the extinction list in the gray background.

In this modern age, in the competition of modern culture, products and modern techniques, many things of the past culture and traditions of Bengali are in crisis of existence today. Among the lost symbols of Bengali culture and heritage, the houses are the most important. Since ancient times, people used to build houses made of straw, wooden houses, mud houses etc. Chhan Ghar was popular among them. Therefore, Chhan Ghar has been carefully placed in Bengali poetry.

“I covered the house with thatch, tied the door of the house,
I have built a fence made of bamboo.
Fill the house with soil, beat it and level it.
Dung unites the ground, coated house fences.”

Air-conditioned house of the poor
There is a proverb in the village – it is not the house of the rich, it is the air-conditioned house of the poor. That is, the people living in Chhan houses think that Chhan houses are air-conditioned in extremely hot weather and they are protected from extreme cold in winter. Many affluent families built Chhan Kacharigharas (resthouses) to escape the scorching heat and spend their time in comfort during Chaitra afternoons. But the poor, poor or middle-class families of the village were the only refuge of the Chhan house. Chhan was used as a canopy for a dochala or charchala house made of bamboo poles and mats or bamboo slats. Even two or three centuries ago, Chhan houses were seen in different parts of rural Bengal. Can’t meet now. In some hilly areas there are occasional houses. Living in a cool house saves you from the irony of being overheated even in extreme heat, as well as from the Konkan cold in extreme winters.

Villages and houses are disappearing
Villages are disappearing due to economic development as a result of the evolution of time and improvement of people’s living standards and new scientific discoveries. The shanty shelter of Bengal’s hard-working people is disappearing. Once upon a time, the traditional families of rural Bengal were full of cows full of cows, shells full of rice, ponds full of fish and fruits like mango, jam, jackfruit, banana etc. It doesn’t look like that anymore. It is not seen to play 32 or 64 knots by making marks on the ground in the month of Chaitra on the lazy afternoon of the village path. Various customs and traditions including sports festivals for spending time or entertainment through sports. You can’t see the traditional houses of the poor people of rural Bengal.
